Large Fluctuations in Google Maps and Local Search Results - Bug or Update?

There have been recent reports of major shifts in Google Maps and Local Search local search results. Many businesses noticed that their positions in search results suddenly dropped significantly, despite not having made any changes to their websites or Google Business profiles.

Companies that were stable in the first three positions for years have fallen in some cases to spots outside the top 20. At the same time, companies with few or no reviews, or even companies that are no longer active, have suddenly risen in the rankings. The local SEO community is reacting with concern and speculation as to the cause of these fluctuations. Some suspect an update to Google's algorithm, while others believe it is a technical bug. There are reports of similar problems in online forums such as Reddit and the Local Search Forum, where many users report the same sudden drops. Despite extensive checks, affected businesses confirm that their pages are still indexed, no major changes have occurred with competitors, and no manual actions have been reported in Google Search Console.

Yet their positions in search results remain low, even for keywords on which they previously ranked stably high. Although some users have contacted Google Support, they received mostly automated responses with general tips on local optimization. This has caused uncertainty and frustration for many businesses, as the problem does not seem to be directly related to their own SEO strategy. At this point, it remains unclear whether this is a deliberate change in Google's algorithm or an error in the system. However, there are signs that the problem may have been a bug and is slowly beginning to resolve itself. SEO specialists and businesses are keeping a close eye on developments pending further information or updates from Google.
